If you take your CBT at the age of 16, you can upgrade to a limited 50cc bike when you turn 17. After 19 you are able to move to an A1 license that permits you to ride a 125cc bicycle without plates or L plates and to carry the passenger.
The A2 is the next step. You can either upgrade from an A1 or take a direct access theory and practical test.
A1 Licence
The open road, the breeze in your hair and the thrill of riding on a motorcycle. It's a great experience, but you'll need first obtain your A1 license.
The A1 license is the first rung on the bike licensing ladder, and allows you to ride mopeds and motorcycles up to 125cc with the power output of up to 11kW. The A1 licence is accessible to people who are 17 or older. It's a great way to begin your motorbike journey.
For an A1 license to be granted, you must complete the Compulsory Base Training (CBT) and pass a test on theory and two-part exam. The CBT course is essential for motorcycle training and prepares you for both the theory and the practical test. For your A1 practical test, you will be accompanied by a qualified motorcycle instructor. The test will last about 20 minutes and will consist of modules 1 and 2. Module 1 is held at the training center, and will focus on off-road maneuvers, such as controlled stops, a slalom, and an eight-point figure. The remaining portion of the test is conducted on the road and will test your ability to manage a motorbike in a fast speed.
Module 2 will focus on riding a motorcycle in traffic and navigating intersections. You will be assessed in regards to your ability to follow road signs and understand and follow the rules of the road. You will be required to demonstrate your skills at low speeds and to perform slow-controlled exercises, such as turning left and riding up and down a hill or turning right and then making a U-turn.
After passing your A1 licence, you can upgrade to an A2 licence after passing your CBT Theory and Practical Tests. You will then be able to operate any A2 category bike, and carry a passenger.
A2 Licence
The A2 Licence represents the second step to obtaining a full motorbike licence. The A2 licence is available at the age of 19 years old with an active CBT course and is a restricted version of the full motorcycle licence. It permits you to ride motorcycles with the maximum power output of 47 BHP however, motorcycles that produce more than this can be restricted down up to 94 BHP.
If you decide to take the A2 route, you will be required to be able to pass Module 1 and Module 2 of your motorcycle test. Both tests are taken on a bike that is eligible for A2 entitlement. Both modules can be booked in the same location as your CBT course as well as the theory test. The A2 route suits riders who have completed their CBT course fairly quickly and are ready, both financially and in terms of experience to upgrade to a larger bike.
The first module of your A2 motorcycle test is a car park course where you will be taught how to control the bike, including slow speed manoeuvring and emergency stops. Then, you'll take the on-road portion of the test where you will be expected to demonstrate hazard avoidance exercises as well as road positioning. You are also required to conduct lifesaver checks and maintain an interval of two seconds between you and the vehicle in front of you. A3 Licence
The A2 Licence allows riders to upgrade to larger bikes with more power. It also provides additional benefits that aren't available with the CBT, such as riding on motorways and transporting passengers. You can make the leap from CBT to A2 by having additional training completed and passing the required practical exams. The A2 license is valid for two years. After this, it can be upgraded to an unlimited A license.
The first step to getting your A2 license is to pass the Compulsory Base Training (CBT) test as well as the Motorcycle Theory Test. After you have completed these requirements, you can take the Module 1 and Module 2 practical tests. The module 1 practical test is about proving your ability to safely ride on a closed circuit while the module 2 test includes moves on the open road.
You must be able show good observation skills during the A2 practical test and be able to anticipate road hazards. You must also be able use the correct road positioning, and perform controlled manoeuvres. You must be able for example, to execute a U turn and a figure eight. You must be able to manage the bike in slow-speed conditions such as turning at junctions or responding to traffic signals.
After passing your A2 test, you are able to begin working towards obtaining the full A license. This can be accomplished through the progressive access route or taking a direct entry exam. To be able to take the direct entry route you must pass the theory test and pass the mod 1 and module 2 practice tests on a bike that is at 54bhp or more.
The A1 and A2 licenses differ from the rest of the motorbike licences as they are restricted by weight-to-power ratio and not engine cc's. This means that some 600cc bikes can still be A2 compliant, especially when they have restrictor kits fitted. It's important to know that not all bikes claiming to be A2 compliant are actually A2 compliant. Do your research prior to purchasing one.
A4 Licence
The A4 Licence allows drivers to drive vehicles with four wheels or more. This license includes trucks, buses and coaches. It also covers vehicles that transport dangerous items. Drivers must pass a criminal record test to be eligible for the license. The Digital Driving Licence displays important details, including the date of issuance and classes of vehicles that the motorist is certified to drive.
In order to obtain an A1-A4 license, the driver must undergo training at a local transportation office or an approved driving school. They must also pass a physical test. The training course lasts about 5 hours (1 day) and includes lectures on defensive driving, driving etiquettes and the related laws.
